Twilight Breaking Dawn – Sofia Coppola & Van Sant asked to direct?

EW is reporting that while we still don’t really know when or how (in terms of format–1 or 2 films) Breaking Dawn – the fourth chapter of the “Twilight Saga” – will arrive, we do know that Summit Entertainment is looking for a director. They are not at all aiming low or going for the obscure, as the three names being offered up are Sofia Coppola, Gus Van Sant, and Bill Condon. Only Van Sant has been confirmed to have actually been approached.
Back in September we showed you this video of Robert Pattinson naming Van Sant as someone he’d like to see helm Breaking Dawn. Kristen Stewart actually confirmed that Van Sant had been approached in this talk with MTV :
All three are quality and would be interesting choices for sure (in both directions). It wouldn’t be the first intriguing choice, however, as I think David Slade qualifies, though he went into Eclipse nowhere near as accomplished as this trio (which is simply an observation on body of work, I liked Hard Candy quite a bit).
Any preferences?

Gus Van Sant?! Maybe Icarus didn’t fly close enough to the sun. Why not just ask him to direct the next Transformers movie or Pirates of the Caribbean VIII: The Search for a Coherent Story. Van Sant is going to polity decline, but really should be disgusted that someone would assume his skill would be wasted on some half-ass teeny-bopper vampire movie.
He might’ve directed it over a decade ago but now he’s a Hollywood player who can pick and choose the types of movies he wants to make, not movies that a bunch of fanboys (whoops, fangirls) want him to make.
Sofia Coppola got lucky with ‘Lost in Translation’ and needs a career boost, maybe she’ll do it.
