Spider-Man 4 – Rachel McAdams or Romola Garai as Black Cat?
Comic Books, Movies, News | Jay Tomio | November 10, 2009 at 3:29 amIn October we brought a bit of Sam Raimi talking potential villains for the 4th Spider-Man film (potentially boring me to death with the Lizard), and while the central antagonist is still unclear, the good old fashioned comic book/movie rumor mill is churning (via Mania and The Observer) , and is only notable because we can talk Rachel McAdams and Romola Garai.

Mania is reporting that “reliable sources” are telling them that BSC-approved Rachel McAdams has met with the producers of the film to talk about the role of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. The Garai bit comes directly from her via the Observer, beginning her piece:
“Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen.” This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself “on tape” for a part in Spider-Man 4. This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.
You can read the full piece here.
The character herself goes back to the late 70s, debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man#194–another contribution (who has just put it down everywhere) by Marv Wolfman. The comic itself has always been a favorite (relative for its age) to collectors, as Spider-Man is just popular in general, has a black cover (which collectors tend to like to call “tough”–and the census doesn’t really disprove that actually), and the whole general “drawn female in tights/comic book nerd” relationship.
McAdams is in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes film with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law (and was recently in The Time Traveler’s Wife). Garai has been in several films, including Atonement (based on the McEwan novel).
Both fit the bill.

Up against most anybody I’d choose Rachel McAdams — so there you go
Well, you don’t get BSC-approval for nothing! I think it would be interesting as I don’t recall seeing her in film that requires her to do action (though maybe she does in Sherlock Holmes)
