Raimi on Spider-Man 4 Villains

MTV had a brief chat on the phone with Sam Raimi regarding the potential antagonists for Spider-man 4, and the reader poll regarding the subject. It all sounds very boring, though its an expected talk down and back-to-character statement from the crowded, movie-watching debacle that was the Spider-Man 3.

First, let me kick of the day by being Emperor obvious: readers polls are fundamentally useless (see Marvel’s recent greatest cover ever tally). Second, If we are going to go with this character-driven, Parker-introspective stories, look no further than Kraven’s Last Hunt–the last classic Spider-Man story in comics, brought to us by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck (Web of Spider-Man #31-32, Amazing Spider-Man #293-294 and Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132.) End of story.

For myself though, after three movies an close to 50 years of story, we are entering Superman territory in that I think we all know and get Peter Parker. While I admit Carnage would be a waste of time (and perhaps better reserved for the Venom film being worked), I kind of just want to see Spidey web-slinging and kicking ass. While the thought of the Sinister Six may alarm people due to the issue of the last film was largely said to be too many villains–the real issue was too many (attempts) at story. Venom and Sandman weren’t problems for simply being in the film . I just didn’t buy them. While I can see some kind great horror vignette with Raimi’s preferred Lizard story, I’m not sure if that’s a film that’s interesting.

While I enjoyed the first two films, I hope that we will one day get a Spider-man film from Marvel Studios, because when I watch Iron Man, I always think they made a great Spider-Man movie in terms of tone and sensibility.

Spidey 4 has a May 2011 date attached, so we have time!
