Jason Momoa Confirmed in HBO’s A Game of Thrones

Earlier today I was manning my twitter station and saw Winter is Coming pointing to a report by a con goer attending Armageddon Expo who said that they heard actor Jason Momoa state that he would be taking on the role of Drogo in the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones. Being a fan of the series and knowing how much people like confirmation when it comes to projects that they love, I checked up on this and can now report that HBO has confirmed to me that this report (and Momoa’s statements) were both the truth (not that we had any reason to doubt!) and official.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the previous work of Mr. Momoa enough to speak on what he brings to the table, but he certainly looks the part. Apparently, he was a fixture on Stargate Atlantis as “Ronon Dex”, and will be in Stargate: Exeinction. He was also in all of the episodes of North Shore.

Khal Drogo himself is obviously an important character as one would assume it is through him viewers will model (and use as contrast to Westeros) what the Dothraki are. His role in the life of Daenerys Targaryen (to be played by Tamzin Merchant) cannot be overstated, as I think that character’s transition is sold to us by Drogo. Also, I’m not sure if this is common knowledge, but I was also told that the show starts production in a week.

Other casting news we’ve noted include the filling of the roles of The HoundCersei Lannisterthe Stark SistersTheon Greyjoy,  Rob Stark, and Jorah Mormont. These announcements were additions to the earlier castings  of Sean Bean (Ned Stark), Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) Harry Lloyd (Viserys) Jack Gleeson (Joffrey) Mark Addy (Robert), Peter Dinklage, and Jennifer Ehle as Catelyn Stark.

Let’s get pumped! A Game of Thrones is based off of the novel by George R.R.  Martin, the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

  1. Jay, they’ve also confirmed Isaac Hempstead-Wright as Bran Stark, whilst Jamie Campbell Bower and Esme Bianco have both said via Twitter that they’re playing Ser Waymar Royce and a prostitute called Ros in King’s Landing, respectively.

We’re still waiting for 100% confirmation on five other roles (Joseph Mawle as Benjen Stark, Richard Ridings as Gared, Ron Donachie as Ser Rodrik Cassel, Donald Sumpter as Maester Luwin and Ian McNeice as Ilyrio Mopatis) but HBO are apparently unwilling to release a full cast list or confirmation for the smaller roles as yet.

Hmmm…let me see what we can do!

  3. Sandra says:

Jason did confirm it. He also confirmed a nude sex scene (his first).

  4. Jay Tomio says:

well, if you’re going to have a sex scene, nude tends to work better!

SERIOUSLY PUMPED, love to be on the set to see this unfold. Drogo is a lesser role, but an important one for Deanerys.

Will he be her Moon and Stars? Drogo smiles alot, doesn’t speak much, comes home for a quickie and is off with his horseplay and battles while the focus is always on Dany. He’ll do.

People always said I was a nerd for reading fantasy but now it’s going to be on HBO. I didn’t vote for this kind of change, but I’ll take it.
