The last time we talked John Carter of Mars we were reporting another trio joining the cast as Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker were confirmed. Today via THR, we learn that two more have been in James Purefoy and Mark Strong, and another we reported way back in June has been confirmed in Thomas Haden Church.

They join the already cast leads of Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins and that of Willem Dafoe. According to the report these are the nature of the roles:

Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

Seems like Purefoy just finds himself where he might be in a position to kick the most ass, as he also headlines another pulp classic, playing Solomon Kane in that film. Big fan of guy since he tended to steal scenes in Rome (and he reunites with Polly Walker here!). We’ve seen Mark Strong in sweet films like Stardust, Sunshine, he is also going to be in a ton of big upcoming films like Kick-Ass (which Purefoy is not in, oddly), Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes film that stars Downey Jr., Jude Law and BSC favorite-Rachel McAdams, and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. I think he’s made it.

Based on the classic pulp works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Disney is shooting for a Summer 2012 release.
