New Pulp Press is a brand new publisher promising to bring “the most original voices in crime fiction and neo-pulp.”

newpulppress

Dedicated to giving voice to some of today’s most talented and neglected writers, New Pulp Press focuses on off-center crime fiction and neo-pulp. Veering away from the assumption that a protagonist must be a sympathetic character, our books are centered around con-men, losers, and sociopaths.

You will find raw and desperate tales about men and women on the wrong side of the law, tales drenched with nihilism and loathing.

I’m looking forward to jumping into these books, they look really interesting, so keep an eye out for write-ups in the near future. I love the artwork and applaud New Pulp Press for going with original art for the covers.

Right now the lineup includes these titles with plenty more on the way:

The Disassembled Man by Nate Flexer

Frankie Avicious is a hard-luck fellow with a sordid past. Living in a dreary meatpacking town, stuck in a loveless marriage, and spending his days slaughtering cattle, Frankie has nothing to look forward to but his next swallow of bargain whiskey. His wife is threatening to leave him, and the local sociopath is threatening to kill him. And then there’s Scarlett Acres, a stripper with a heart of fool’s gold. Frankie can’t stop thinking about her…

With the encouragement of a mysterious traveling salesman, Frankie sets out to reverse his destiny through a series of bizarre murders. The consequences of his brutality turn out to be far worse than even he could imagine.

Almost Gone by Stan Richards

almostgone_200

With this eerie, suspenseful, and heart-wrenching debut novel, Stan Richards provides shocking twists to familiar roman noir themes. Police officer Chuck Johnson is driving on a rainy two-lane highway when he loses control and crashes into a semi-truck. Although he survives the accident, Chuck learns that he has suffered a serious trauma to his brain. From that moment on he begins having strange hallucinations about his mother’s death, which occurred when he was a teenager.

Obsessed that he might have played a role in her brutal murder, Chuck Johnson reopens the unsolved case and ventures into the dark oedipal depths of his childhood. But he soon learns that the past is not what it seems to be.

While the Devil Waits by Jackson Meeks

devilwaits_200

Unemployed and stuck caring for his invalid mother, Jackson Meeks’ unnamed protagonist is just biding his time. When a childhood friend named Travis asks him to help rob a fast food restaurant, he agrees—not because he’s interested in making money but because he hopes that the inertia of his life will finally be broken.

As the robbery goes terribly wrong, the nameless protagonist ushers readers into a nightmare journey on the lam. From the streets of Harlem to the small towns of West Virginia, While the Devil Waits presents a nihilistic view of America and humanity.

The Butcher’s Granddaughter by Michael Lion

They call him Bird. He makes his living by understanding how Los Angeles operates after the sun goes down. When a French-Vietnamese transplant named Li Nguyen approaches Bird and asks him to protect her sister Song from a jealous boyfriend, Bird reluctantly agrees. But it doesn’t take long for Bird to realize that Song’s troubles go much deeper than a little domestic dispute.

As the bodies start to pile up, Bird finds himself entrenched in a labyrinth of familial rivalries and resentments. From the mean streets of Los Angeles to the slums of Honolulu, it will take all of Bird’s cunning to avoid meeting his own bloody fate.

    These look hot.

  2. Billy Thornton says:

I recently purchased The Disassembled Man on a friend’s advice. It’s a pretty incredible read. Funny, but scary as hell. If you like Jim Thompson, you’ll probably dig this book.

  3. These caught my eye recently. Haven’t seen any reviews. Fingers crossed that there’s a ballsy new small press doing hardboiled and noir. Like the covers.

  4. Paul Brazill says:

these look well worth a look.

  5. Keith Rawson says:

There’s been a couple of new hard-boiled presses spring up recently that have looked pretty cool. And from the synopsis’ I’ve read of their upcoming books, they look promising.

Great prize, Brian! It’s good to see some new publishing companies emerging from the smoking ruins of the financial difficulties this country has suffered, and it’s a hopeful sign we’re on the way to recovery!
Well,if not all that, a sign that maybe some people haven’t given up hope on their chances to make a buck in the book business despite the USA’s low percentage of aults who read even one book a year…discounting all of the nice folks who contribute to and read this excellent site, of course!
