Article Pulled

This is just an announcement regarding a recent article here regarding 2008’s Cover Girls. I’ve pulled it because I found it to be admittedly a little odd, and in a manner that could be misconceived.

For the record, I know that the intent behind it was not to be malicious. I know the author of it; the guy is my partner at this site, and I know what kind of character he has (I also know his age, and that he is in fact married :) !) That said, I also know how it has been perceived. People who know Damon (or just see what he has done at this site) know he’s hardly the ‘edgy’ type, and makes no attempt to be controversial in any way. It is because I know Damon that I wanted to let it ride, and see if people can see what I knew – that he was just trying to have fun with something.

It rolled for a day and it became evident that this was not the case, so I had it pulled. When I say I had it pulled, it merely means I suggested it, and he agreed. It is not – nor has it ever been – BookSpot Central’s intent to offend anyone, but even if we have done so unintentionally, we offer our most sincere apologies.

The question becomes, when was I aware of the content? I knew that Damon was working on an article and I knew what it was about. I also looked over it in terms of the layout (images) pre-publication, but I didn’t read it until I saw Larry link to it (though I may have commented on the covers themselves). Generally, we don’t ask for permission from each other to post content on this site. I’m quite sure Damon never looks at my material before it’s published, and I know I don’t look at his. We are both owners, neither of us need each other to sign-off on anything. When I did read it, I was sure I knew Damon’s intent, but equally, I knew how it could very well be viewed.

I want to add that I appreciate some points made by Larry (at OF Blog of the Fallen) about ethnic representation on covers, and what constitutes beauty on SF/F covers as perceived by the actual reader base, and hope to see him pursue that angle, as it has the look of an interesting topic. That said, the situation has, however, exposed some people that we have called friends and associates for what they truly are, and for that it’s been educational even if truthfully unfortunate.

Once again, our apologies for any offense or inconvenience given.
